Saupa

Reliable. Sustainable. Eucalyptus Wooden Poles.

Setting the standard for eucalyptus utility poles, locally and globally.

Why Choose Treated Eucalyptus Poles

Properly treated eucalyptus poles offer numerous advantages:

Durability

Treated poles are resistant to decay, insects, and harsh weather conditions, ensuring a longer lifespan.

Cost-Effectiveness

The extended service life of treated poles translates to lower maintenance and replacement costs over time.

Compliance

SAUPA ensures that all poles meet the rigorous SANS standards, guaranteeing quality and reliability.

Environmental Sustainability

Eucalyptus trees grow rapidly, making them a renewable resource.

About Us

SAUPA is a collective of South African eucalyptus utility pole treating plants and users, all holding SANS certification. Our objectives include:

  • Promoting South African eucalyptus creosote and CCA utility poles in local and export markets.

  • Consulting with stakeholders to provide reliable, cost-effective utility poles.

  • Aligning South African specifications (SANS and preservative specifications) with international standards.

  • Conducting ongoing research on South African creosote, CCA, and eucalyptus poles to provide stakeholders with up-to-date information.

  • Assisting marketing personnel in interpreting various international specifications and adapting SANS specifications accordingly.

From plantation to marketplace

The Lifecycle of a South African Eucalyptus Utility Pole

Sustainable Forestry & Harvesting

The process begins in managed eucalyptus plantations across South Africa. These plantations are cultivated using sustainable forestry practices, ensuring a renewable and eco-friendly source of timber. Trees selected for utility poles are chosen for their height, straightness, and overall quality.

Sizing and Primary Processing

Once processed, the selected logs are moved to a treatment facility. At this stage, they are stripped of bark, cut to length, and shaped as needed. Every pole undergoes inspection to evaluate durability, alignment, and readiness for deployment in various utility and structural projects.

Seasoning and Drying

To prepare the poles for preservation, moisture content must be reduced. This is done through air-drying in stacking yards or by kiln-drying in more controlled environments. Proper drying is essential to ensure the preservative penetrates deeply and effectively during treatment.

Preservative Treatment

The dried poles undergo treatment with preservatives—either creosote or CCA (Copper Chrome Arsenate)—depending on the end-use and destination market requirements. This is typically done through a high-pressure vacuum process, which forces the preservative deep into the timber fibers, providing long-lasting resistance to decay, insects, and environmental exposure.

Inspection, Testing & Certification

After treatment, poles are tested to verify preservative retention and penetration. Inspections are carried out under the SANS standard to ensure they meet South African and international quality benchmarks. Certified poles are stamped with an official mark to indicate compliance.

Storage & Logistics

Once certified, the poles are sorted by size, type, and destination, and stored at the plant’s yard. From here, they are either shipped locally or exported internationally. SAUPA members often work with logistics partners to streamline delivery to utility companies, municipalities, and infrastructure developers.

Marketing & Promotion

Marketing involves educating stakeholders—utilities, contractors, regulators, and export clients—on the benefits of properly treated eucalyptus poles. SAUPA plays a key role in this by hosting educational events, publishing research, adapting SANS standards to global specifications, and promoting the South African pole industry through strategic partnerships and media outreach.

Industry Insights

Understanding the broader context of our industry is crucial.

The utility pole industry is evolving—driven by new technologies, environmental policies, and infrastructure demands across energy, telecommunications, and agriculture. At SAUPA, we monitor these trends closely to ensure that South African eucalyptus poles remain at the forefront of global infrastructure solutions.
